Magazine follows Radiohead's Idea

Paste magazine recently has followed Radiohead's idea of letting their customers pay as much as they want for a subscription to their magazine. A magazine to follow is Premier Guitar. Premier Guitar will be wrapping 10,000 copies of the December issue with a "pay what you want subscription card" that allows customers to pay anything they would like for their 12 months of reading. Their goal is "create exposure for a relatively new magazine," increase subscriptions and internet audience.

Hopefully this new idea that has proven success with Radiohead will show the same positive results with the magazines.

thats pretty neat, I wonder how many other magazines could afford to do that. I acutally just read an article about what its like for small independent magazines to even try to publish and make money (barley anything if they even break even) Same argument I guess for small bands vs. big bands ability to enter this new way of consuming. I assume that the guitar magazine isan't a small indy but it backed up.

That is a really great idea. This is a really smart way to gain publicity. They have a good shot of getting a large number of people who are true followers of their magazine. Who wouldn't want to get 12 months worth of magazines for almost no money. I would take it!

I think it is a wonderful way for a new magazine to get started. If they are confident in their product this might just be a fantastic way to launch themselves. And maybe as time goes on, returning customers will want to pay more. . .
